How to Setup Your Aquarium for Aquatic Plants?

  • To grow properly, aquatic plants need 8-12 hours of sunlight per a day. Set the aquarium near and energy source / but out side the real sun. They use a hood light on the tanks to provide radiation.

  • The amount of like your aquarium needs depends on the size of the tank. The table below shows how many lights its fixtures or equivalent LEDs should be installed.

  • When considering plants for your tank, do not choose one that leaves too much space for fish.

  • Place 2 to 3 inches (5-8 cm) of gravel in the aquarium (about 10 pounds of gravel per gallon of water) or any other substrate designed for plants.

  • Add aquarium-plant fertilizer according to the instructions on the label.

  • Fill the aquarium half full with water.

  • Add the plants.  Bury in gravel to the base of their trunks.  For bulbs and tubers, cover the bulb with gravel until the growing tip.



 Where should I place plants in the aquarium?


  • Use the front plants that rest on the front of the tank.

  • Use medium-sized plants that grow to a height of 4 to 10 inches (10-25 cm) on either side.

  • Use taller plants to hide aquarium filter tubes and heaters against the back wall of the aquarium.

  • Add fish furniture, rocks, thermometers and any other aquarium. Fill the tank with water.

How do I keep aquarium water clean?


  • For optimal water quality, change the water 10% every week or 25% every month.

  • Regular water changes not only prevent the unwanted accumulation of solid waste, but also remove nitrates and other contaminants from fish and plants.

How do I keep aquatic plants healthy?


If you notice any of the signs described below, talk to a PetSmart store assistant about the health of your plant.


  • Brown spots on leaves
  • Pale green to yellowish leaves
  • Plants cease to grow and die off
  • Rotting bulbs
  • Algae in the aquarium

Be careful when growing semi-aquatic (i.e. not fully aquatic) plants in an aquarium.  Semi-aquatic plants are best when their roots are submerged in gravel, but their tops grow above the water surface.

  •  Aquatic animals and plants can transmit diseases to humans.  Wash hands with soap and water after interacting with your aquarium.  Children, pregnant women, the elderly and people with immune problems should be given extra care.  Adults should help children to wash their hands.

  •  Keep aquatic plants and habitats away from food and food preparation areas.

  •   Do not dispose of aquatic plants in the forest.  They can harm the environment.
